Classy

I myself am not a BYU fan and I never will be. However, I know there are BYU fans that do read my blog occasionally and before I throw all this out there I guess I should start by saying I'm not pinning this on the school in anyway. Yes, I don't like BYU. But it wasn't BYU who did this, it was a person. More specifically Max Hall. For those who don't know who he is he was one of the best quarter backs BYU has seen and I'll admit, he was pretty dang impressive. The problem I have with him stemmed from this here video....

Yes. Us Utes are classless. Totally classless and he hates us all.

Again, I will say I am not pinning his comments on the Y. I won't base my judgement on the whole school based on one person. I personally wish Max would have done this and thought it through before he said these things. It wasn't the University of Utah who dumped beer on his family. It was immature people who were being stupid and did a really rude and disrespectful thing. There are disrespectful people everywhere and you can find them at any sporting event regardless of which team they are fans of. Last year I went to the Y for the rivalry game and I'll tell you, I had people heckle me just as much as the Y fans are heckled. F-bombs and all. It's a two way street.

I don't think he thought these comments through and I'm sure he just said them in the heat of the moment but he still referred to anyone even associated with the University of Utah as classless and proclaimed that he hated us all. That's fine. To each their own.

After that he got a ton of crap from the Ute fans because well, we're classless.

Well, Tuesday the news broke that Mr. Classy himself, Max Hall, was arrested in Arizona for what appeared to be shop lifting and when they were searching him found cocaine, needles, a metal spoon, and a lighter.

When I heard this, my first instinct was to laugh. I mean, he was even wearing a BYU t-shirt in his mug shot, was he not? The jokes that could come from this were endless. Karma, right?

That was what I thought for the first few minutes after reading the story. It wasn't long after that that I genuinely felt so heartbroken for him. Thanks to Amazon Prime, I've watched my fair share of the show Intervention, especially lately. To watch and see how wrapped up in drugs people get just makes me sick to my stomach and at the end of every episode the only thing I want to see is that they stayed sober and didn't revert back to their old ways. There's no proof that Max was actually doing drugs, but again from watching Intervention people shoplift all the time as a way to pay for their addiction and the stuff he had in his bag was pretty obviously drug related. In his mug shot he even appeared to be a little loopy. In fact, the longer you look at it the more sad the whole situation becomes. I mean this guy has a career, a wife, and two kids. It's sad that whatever he's going through made him turn to drugs. And now, he has to face the public and the endless comments that are pouring his way. It's scary to think that professional sports play such a large role in addiction and to see just how many professional athletes, current and former, get sucked into the world of addiction. It is such a sad thing to me and I personally wish they would be more concerned about it and do more to prevent it.

I am a die hard Utah fan and I always will be but I genuinely hope he can get his stuff together and get the help he needs for his family's sake.

But until then..... Jimmer better be careful.

What I Learned at the 2013 Holy War

Disclaimer: if you're a Y fan, you probably shouldn't read this because this post just "isn't fair". Or you can read it and complain after. The choice is yours.

If you've ever been to Utah you know that there is a massive rivalry between us Utah Utes and those so called Cougars aka the "Team Down South". This year was a big deal because it will be the last rivalry game for 3 years. That means the winner will be entitled to massive bragging rights. I was lucky enough to go to the game but unfortunately it was on their turf. I mean grass. So, while I was down in Provo, I learned a thing or two...

  • First and foremost would definitely be that this war is no where near holy.
  • Nothing is fair.
  • "Defense" is too long of a word. We must say "D". "Let's go D" "We got this D" ... because you know, 2 syllables is way too much to handle.
  • Caffeine is not allowed within 3 square miles of BYU. We wouldn't want to make our student section too loud and exciting.
  • Nothing is fair.

  • The Y "fans" have no clue what the words to their fight song are.
  • Dropping the F-bomb is a-okay at a school that prides themselves on their "high" standards. Y fans will defend each other when throwing this word around. But, if this happens at the U it's totally unacceptable. Even though our school has no such "honor" code that we should be representing. Oh by the way... Where was Hadley tonight?
  • The Ute fans will always be classless. The Y is always super classy.

It's okay Max, we hate you too.

Can we all just admit that when it comes to this "holy" war there is no class present anywhere.

  • The fact that we are part of the Pac 12 really pisses off every Y fan. Even though they can't tell you why.
  • Nothing is fair.
  • The BYU student section is pitiful... easily 3 times larger than the MUSS and about 30 times quieter.
  • The guy behind me wants to know where in the scriptures it says you can't say the F-word.
  • Bitter is an understatement
  • The refs are so unfair, unless of course they rule in BYU's favor, then they're suddenly amazing.
  • The U is paying the refs under the table to rule in our favor. Yup, 20 grand each time.
  • Nothing is fair.
This was seen multiple times throughout the game. It just wasn't fair.
  • The fact that the score board accidentally got messed up when resetting the clock and showed the Utes had 6 more points than we really did, is our fault. Even though it was at their stadium and they had control of the score board. It's all the Utes' fault.

  • The MUSS alone can be louder than the whole BYU stadium combined. Sad but true.
  • Y fans are total whiners. If something doesn't go their way it is nothing but complaining and excuses. Man up. We do... we got a penalty for illegal substitution... dang it, we screwed up, let's move on with the game.
  • It is only the Ute fans who are rude. The Y fans can do no wrong.

And oh yeah, did I mention that nothing is fair?

Holy War Weekend

I've always wanted to "hike" the U.  We decided we would finally go last Friday. We were all naive and thinkin' it would be a real hike.
We packed our lunches and off we went.  We drove to the "trail head" and headed down what we thought was going to be a fun little hike.  Well basically you go onto a paved path for about 100 ft.  This dumps you into a neighborhood where you walk along the paved road for another 50 ft and whoa now that you're short of breathe and your legs are trembling from that intense hike... you're finally there! Yeah, what a hike!

Despite the no hiking it was pretty cool to see it up close.

That's me. On the paved road. In front of the U.

The view was pretty cool.

Me and Jess. . . I'm glad I have no eyes. Courtesy of my hat.

Well Saturday rolled around and it was game day.
BYU vs. UTAH
Go Utes!
Not going to lie.  I was pretty nervous for this game.
That was until the first 2 minutes of the game when BYU basically gift wrapped a touchdown and handed it to us.
Final score?
Utah: 54
BYU: 10
Ouch!
My favorite reaction about the final score came from my cousin. . .
 BYU got Jimmered!

Dad was a sport and watched the game with 3 Ute fans.  After the first couple minutes of the game he says, "maybe I should go change my shirt."

This is him after the game. I helped him with his headwear.

Sunday was basically pretty normal. Not much happened.  Jess did help me plan my week though.  This is what resulted. . .
